Impressive Belgium Ease to Final Warm Up Win

As teams wind down their preparations ahead of the 2018 World Cup, Belgium threw down one of the final markers before the tournament. They won 4-1 against Costa Rica, a team who will also travel to Russia this summer, and made things look very easy. This was exactly the type of result they needed ahead of their trip to Russia, and it will have given them a timely confidence boost before the important games commence.

While Belgium were impressive, it is worth noting that their opponents Costa Rica were very poor on the night. After what we have seen from them in their warm up games so far, things are going to be very tough for them at the World Cup. With Brazil, Switzerland and Serbia in opposition, seeing Costa Rica end the tournament with zero points would not come as a surprise. They struggle to create too much going forward, and have been opened up at the back, which isn’t the kind of formula you need ahead of a major tournament.

One thing that will have worried fans of Belgium ahead of the World Cup would have been seeing Eden Hazard limp off during the second half. The reports are that he has a dead leg, and things aren’t serious, but injury scares just days before a major competition gets underway are not what you want.

A big positive for the Belgians was seeing Romelu Lukaku score twice during the game to build his confidence. He has played well for Manchester United during the season, but on occasions he failed to find the net when they needed him the most. His goals will be important to Belgium, so seeing him on the scoresheet will have delighted their fans.

With just days to go ahead of the World Cup, this was a very impressive performance by Belgium and it came at just the right time for them. They haven’t beaten much, but at this stage that doesn’t matter for them, all that matters is the win and team confidence.

After their impressive display, Belgium are 8/11 to win Group G, with England looking to be their main threat. Those two teams should know each other very well with the amount of Belgian players in the Premier League, and their showdown, which is also the final group game in Group G, is likely to be a very good game.
